This small group study, created by the Alabama-West Florida Reconciling Ministries Team, helps fill the void many were feeling in understanding the situation within the United Methodist Church. Although everyone brings their own biases, the team designed the study to be non-dualistic, truthful and helpful to anyone trying to understand the political turmoil in the UMC. The people who designed the study are all people who plan to stay in the UMC and hope for a more just, diverse and inclusive future.
The United Methodist Church: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow study was enthusiastically received by laity and clergy from West Texas to Canada to the Congo both times it was offered online in 2021. Participants spoke of how helpful it was to them and how it inspired them to teach it in their small groups and churches.
You are invited to complete the study on your own with the following resources:
1. A workbook has been created and published for the study. Download a free PDF here, or purchase print copies on Amazon.
2. All the videos from the study are available to watch at any time free of charge on our AWF RMN YouTube channel which can be found here.
If you are in an area where you could use a little help explaining the situation and why staying with the UMC is important, we hope this will be a valuable tool for you as we all continue to strive to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The study is free and available for you to share in a group setting. A Leader Guide for the study can be downloaded by completing a brief form here.

“The AWF Reconciling Group has created a series of thought-provoking, informative, and incredibly useful videos that take us through the key components of our history, our current situation, and the possibilities that lie ahead. This series is ideal for those who want to help their Sunday School class, Bible study group or entire congregation navigate the conversation about the situation we find ourselves in as a denomination. The videos gave me hope for our future, a future where all God's children are welcomed and affirmed in The UMC.” - Helen Ryde, Regional Organizer, Reconciling Ministries Network
